Artist’s Statement: The possibility of Roe v Wade being overturned activated me to create book works that reflect the status of body politics facing women in the United States. This conceptual book pairs the notion of a bipartisan political system and sexuauality-based violence against women. As the imagery escalates with hand-stitching upon the intermediary negatives of the cyanotypes, the question hangs, what kind of party is this? Provoking further examination, the images alternated between positives and negatives asking the viewer to assign their personal affiliations to the progression.
For the 6-panel concertina bind, I found parallels between the struggle on the marbling vat with pushing and pulling of the colors in Red and Blue and the acceleration of political turmoil within America.
Typically using the leftovers from the completed book, I enjoy the colophon process for each book work. This creates a unique colophon format and adds to the conceptual possibilities. Detritus, the waste or the shed, seems more important now than previously.
