Workshop Title: Lotus and Star Books
Date & Time: Wednesday, July 22, 2015 – 10am to 4pm
Location: Canton, MA
Limited to 6 students
Tuition: $125 includes all materials, technique handouts, and lunch
Enter the world of ornamental artist’s books. This is the first workshop in a series on interesting, sculptural books. This weekday workshop will concentrate on Lotus and Star books. These fascinating book structures can challenge and expand notions of bookbinding, paper arts, sculpture, photo albums, holiday decorations, jewelry… whoa! and it keeps going… origami, stationary, object d’art. Yeah, it’s a revelation.
The morning will begin with fresh brewed coffee and home-baked goodies at 9:45am, and we’ll break for a fresh, vegetarian lunch with homemade soup, salad and sandwiches. The finish…You’ll be sent on your way by 4:15pm with a cookie in your mouth.
The morning session will cover the basics. We’ll complete 3 books (lotus, star, and hybrid with cutaways). These projects will cover basic adhesive skills, using both glues and adhesive transfer methods, use of bone folder in folding, scoring, and adhesive control, and all the basic skills needed for bookmaking. There’s plenty of discussion about personal project ideas, hybrid possibilities, and conceptual potentials while getting it done.
The afternoon session is an open session for further exploration into one or both of the techniques. Students may choose to create a larger version, another set for gift-giving, an edition of the same book, or something totally unique. My stash of hand-printed marbled and paste papers will inspire many great combination of colors and textures. Beads, buttons, ribbons, twines, oh yeah. Destination creativity.
Add your own personal photos, or even better, Xeroxes of those photos in black & white or color (creativity and the Xerox machine go hand-in-hand). What about other types of mixed media materials? My collection of mixed media bits is always available for snacking. Please bring along any ephemera that jazzes you, too!
Open to everyone ages 18 & up, all media and skill levels.
