Creating a special box to house an artist’s book, a portfolio of prints, or a personal treasure can be one of the most satisfying ways to finish a project. The craftsmanship of a well-made box, in some cases, will eclipse what’s inside. The box provides a protective enclosure while creating an expectation in the viewer and an immediate, tactile connection with the holder.
Our day will begin with a small-scale box with hinged lid. This project will introduce the materials and techniques for box making, adhesives, and best practices for cutting, sizing, and creating your own templates/patterns. Several single-sheet projects on corrugated cardboard, chipboard and heavy-weight card stocks will also build confidence with engineering your box structures.
The morning will begin with fresh brewed coffee and home-baked goodies at 9:45am, and we’ll break for a fresh, vegetarian lunch with homemade soup, salad and sandwiches.
Take a look through my library of artist’s books, how-to books, and my collection of box forms for inspiration or discover something new by combining elements from several structures. Start the journey by picking your materials from Cristina’s curated collection of paste papers, marbled papers, and interesting, locally-sourced papers, as well as, her collection of antique and contemporary book cloths. Interesting choices for ties, elastic cordings, ribbons, buttons and beads will also be available for the perfect finishing touch.
