Paste Paper is one of the earliest forms of surface decoration. In the contemporary context, mixed media artists are finding new uses beyond the traditional book arts. This is a fun, fast-paced decorative art with its true nature seated within the realm of printmaking. As with monoprints, each paste paper is unique.
The morning will begin with fresh brewed coffee and home-baked goodies at 10:30am, and we’ll break for a fresh, vegetarian lunch with homemade soup, salad and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.
To start, we’ll meet and greet and talk about the history of paste paper and an overview of the process, and then we’ll get busy. We’ll begin with a few hours of paste work as an artistic stretch. The perfect amount of time for color and texture play along with design experiments. Then we’ll progress to larger sheets, complex patterns, unusual “papers”, 2-sided applications, and developing a series.
We’ll apply colors mixed with a thick paste using a variety of tools. Custom color choices, tool-making tips and a wide variety of papers will be available.
Start by learning the process or jump right in, if you’re familiar with the materials. This workshop is structured to be an introduction for beginners or an open studio for intermediate or advanced students.
Just a quick note, paste paper is a little messy. I suggest wearing an old shirt!
All skill levels and media are welcome.
All materials provided.
