Books Inside Out – New Bookmaking Workshop – New Art Center Newton – Fall 2017

Create sculptural book and box designs that challenge the notion of “book”. Start with basic binding techniques and practice on small-scale example books before diving into larger personal projects. Stimulating assignments, book content ideas, image transfers, altered books, and even decorative paper techniques like paste paper and Suminagashi (Japanese marbling) will combine to create these mixed media books.

New Fabric Marbling Workshop – Sunday, June 4

Each participant will have their own vat for printing in different sizes to fit the dimensions of the fabrics and products. Typical choices include: Fabric Yardage in cotton, silk, polyester and blends, Pre-sewn “Blanks” in silks and cotton to include pocketsquare, flour sack cloth, and long scarves, Ribbons in a variety of fabrics. Of course, you’ll have custom color mixing for plenty of choices. You’ll leave with a pile of fabric marbling, strategies for marbling on your own, and a cookie in your mouth.

Paste Papers – Studio Workshop – Sat. May 20, 2017

Paste Paper, one of the earliest forms of decorative papers, Paste Paper is commonly used for bookbinding, as well as calligraphy, printmaking, collage, stamping, and origami. Paste Paper is created using acrylic paint or similar pigments mixed in a suspension of paste. After being applied to a dampened sheet of paper, the colored paste can be patterned by pulling various utensils across the paste.

Bookmaking Workshop at Hajosy Arts – Japanese Puncture/Stab Bindings – Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017

This all-day workshop will explore a beloved book structure: the Japanese puncture (or “stab”) binding. This technique is especially useful as it joins individual sheets into a text block. The sheets can be edited and sequenced by the artist, then bound, resequenced, and then bound again and again! Perfect for visual journals, print collections, photo albums, signature books, and upscale scrapbooking, you will find the Japanese puncture book has endless uses.
