While many artists use a journal for collecting their thoughts, reflecting on their artistic process, or sketching ideas for future work, a journal can be the final piece of art as well. This one-day workshop will investigate the relationships between the artist, the journal and specifically, the human body. Whether your own body, someone else’s or even an imaginary one…humanity is wide open with its infinite diversity. Come join Cristina Hajosy in her home studio. Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 10am to 4pm

Experimental Printmaking (and a Book) – New Adult Workshop at Brookline Adult & Community Education, 4 Tuesdays from September 29 – October 20, 2015 from 6:30 – 9:00pm Printmaking is a process of creative discovery because one can never be sure of what each print will bring. Often, the more fun you have, the better the artwork becomes. As you create and manipulate a series of images, you will become a better image-maker as you work on composition, texture, mood, process, and outcome Repeating an image or similar motifs or symbols always leads to an interesting collection. Conceptual and abstract ideas find a way to enter the process with this relaxed, fun experiment.

This all-day workshop will explore another beloved book structure, the Japanese Puncture binding. It’s also referred to as a “stab” binding, but I prefer the more formal and elegant title. This technique is especially useful because it joins individual sheets. The sheets can be edited and sequenced by the artist, then bound, resequenced and bound again, and again – verses filling a bound book. A little freedom can spark creativity. This is my favorite artist’s book for visual journals, print collections, photo albums, signature books, and upscale scrapbooking. Join Cristina at the New Art Center in Newton for Wednesday evenings in the fall. Mixed Media – Photo Based and Image Transfer runs from September 16 through October 21, 2015 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Photo-based imagery within mixed media has become very popular. Along side other collage materials, image transfers give the artist an ability to layer and control the transparency of the ingredients in their artworks. This workshop will focus on the use of photographic images in non-traditional ways, especially image transfers and surface treatments. Solvents, acrylic gel medium and adhesive transfers are some of our projects.

New Date! Private Paper Marbling Workshop – Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 10am to 4pm with Cristina Hajosy. Paper Marbling Projects – Our marbling experiments will begin with a basic overview of “proper” Turkish paper marbling, called “Ebru”. Students will have access to a variety of fresh, new marbling trays, as well as, aged marbling size, and even contaminated mixtures with unique and unpredictable outcomes. Learning the “rules” and breaking them, that’s what this workshop will encourage. Your floating designs may be free-form, combed, blown, or perhaps a mixture. Having several print surfaces evolving at the same time can fill in the down time between dropping the colors and the liquid flow, drift, and crackling. I find the transformations to be hypnotic.
